Anal fistula in simple words is a tube or a tract lined by granulation tissue extending from the Anal canal to the skin around the anal opening. It appears as a painful boil /small abscess in the perianal skin which bursts open spontaneously or is drained in the clinic with discharge of blood and foul smelling pus. Patient feels relief from pain for few days and again the same process repeats itself. It can become a chronic debilitating disease in a person and poses a real challenge to treat especially when the fistula tract passes through the muscles around the anal canal which are responsible for anal continence. FILAC is a minimally invasive procedure wherein a 360 degree radial laser fibre is used to ablate and close the fistula tract. Since the anal sphincter muscles are left unharmed, there is no risk of incontinence even in the more complex types of fistulas. Results using LASER for anal fistula treatment are very promising and used as a single modality for treatment or in combination with other procedure.
